Farragut

Tree work in Farragut neighborhoods

Farragut is a separate town in west Knox County with its own municipal code, so the City of Knoxville's tree ordinance doesn't apply here. If your home is in a subdivision with an HOA, its covenants may add rules of their own.

  • Check your HOA first. If you have an HOA, read its covenants for anything about removing or replanting trees.
  • Street and public trees. Farragut's Public Tree Care Ordinance (Ordinance 22-02) covers trees on public property, and the Tree Board assists Town staff (Town of Farragut). Don't cut those yourself.
  • Ash trees. Emerald ash borer was first found in Tennessee in Knox County in 2010 (TN.gov). The beetle attacks and kills ash trees, so have a dead or declining ash near your house looked at.

Local rules

Farragut tree rules at a glance

  • Chapter 113 (Tree Protection), §113-4, exempts "activities conducted by an owner on his lot of residence," but not the removal of more than one acre of tree cover within a consecutive three-year period (Farragut Code, Ch. 113).
  • §113-4 also exempts removal of hazardous trees, but that exemption requires coordination with the Town.
  • Under §113-27, a grading or land disturbance permit is issued only after the tree preservation/removal plan has been approved.
  • Trees on public property fall under the Public Tree Care Ordinance (Ordinance 22-02); the Tree Board assists Town staff.
  • Questions about the Tree Protection Ordinance go to Farragut Planning & Zoning.

Check with your city; rules change. This is a plain-language summary, not legal advice. Confirm with the official office before work starts. Full details in the permit guide.
